The Augmented Reality Table from Crossing the Pell will be exhibited in the Architecture Biennial of the European Cultural Centre titled Time Space Existence. Crossing the Pell’s focus on infrastructural reuse ties in with the exhibition’s urgent themes of Repair, Regenerate Reuse. The AR Table that showcases designs as experience instead of architectural drawings will additionally shine a light on the question of public agency in the reuse and regeneration of national structures.

The National Bike Summit is an annual conference in D.C. of the League of American Bicyclists whose goal is to create a Bicycle Friendly America through advocacy and support. Together with Bike Newport, our community partner, the RISD Pell Team 2023 exhibited the virtual rides across the four designs for Crossing the Pell. The designs were experienced by the more than 1000 attendees that included educators, public officials and bike advocates.

Pell: Newport, R.I.
In November 2022, Crossing the Pell debuted as an exhibition at Newport’s Old Colony House. The show comprised three different experiences that allowed the visitor to explore the four designs for introducing bike and pedestrian access to the bridge. Pano Tours on VR headsets conveyed the pedestrian experience with a 1:1 scale narrated walk through the designs. Stationary bikes of all sizes with a fully interactive cycling simulation allowed the visitor(s) to pedal and steer through the designs in VR. (Children’s bikes and adult tricycles expanded the age of visitors from 3-93.) A 40 ft. augmented reality (AR) table conveyed bridge history and served as an AR marker to bring a full virtual bridge into the physical environment for complete exploration in a holographic and fully animated projection.
